This is Colin Ferguson. Why do I have a drawing of Colin Ferguson on my website? No reason. It was a simple exercise to keep me sharp
and focused. It’s worth being able to nail likenesses for a commercial standpoint.
Who is Colin Ferguson, you may ask? He is the star of the Sci Fi Channel’s hit show Eureka, which is about to start it’s third season around July. Fantastic show, really.
You may still be asking yourself, so what? Why am I talking about this show and this actor? Well, way back when I was seventeen, going on eighteen I had gotten the chance to be an intern for the Sci-Fi Channel. Honestly, it was a dream opportunity for a young artist not even out of high school. The majority of my work, amazingly enough, was focussed around illustrating poster designs for shows and the occasional storyboarding of short commercial spots.
On one particular day after getting tired of doing Painkiller Jane illustrations (it wasn’t my favorite thing to work on there,) I was given a script for a new show and told to come up with some illustrations for posters for this new show. The script was fantastic. It had me in stitches at my desk. The show was called Eureka.
I immediately got to work on sketches for the show with the goal of blending Norman Rockwell with all the wonder of science fiction. What was produced were pieces involving kids scribbling mathematic equations in chalk on the sidewalk, high tech vehicles refueling at an old fashioned gas station and shots of our yet to be determined hero standing in front of the main street of this idyllic town. It was Back to the Future meets X-Files jam packed with charm and I wanted to do everything I could to make it come together in my sketches.
Down the road, after I was finished with my internship I was heading out for a Fourth of July weekend with some friends and I passed the bus stop near my house only to make a double take. What I saw was a huge poster on the bus stop featuring our yet to be seen hero standing on the main street of this idyllic town whilst out of this world events were occuring before his eyes. Above the poster the title read “Eureka.”
You can understand as an intern how being able to do sketches for what would become a hit show and then seeing the end product inspired from such similar sources can leave an impression on someone.
If you find the time, I do encourage everyone to check the show out. It really is brilliant and the opening sequence is fantastic! Do take a look.

The final part of my webcomic the Greatest has finally been posted. Sorry for the last in the day update but I’ve been a busy bee and it took a little extra time to get the files up. They are there now and I encourage you to check out the exciting ending which I am sure it no shocker to those who know anything about Muhammad Ali. I shall work on new webcomics for those of you interested.
Regard MTV and RD Jr. I’ve got the scan of the piece I did on TRL which I promised to put up. I reiterate that it is not the most spectacular thing I have ever done but it is worthy of discussion:

Now the specs are as follows. It is on 19×24 inch bristol no almost completely with brush and a little fountain pentel. The piece was drawn in what the producers told me was a span of seventeen minutes. (Though it was made to look much longer on television.) It is indeed signed by Robert Downey Jr. along with the phrase “nailed it.” written by Robert Downey Jr. on the top in sharpie. If anyone has $250,000 I’ll be glad to consider parting ways with this but as he is my favorite actor this has a bit of sentimental value of which I would have a hard time really quantifying, till I can I am open to hearing your best offers. I’ve already had a surprising number of emails with really interesting numbers in them.
Hope everyone is doing well.

For some reason I caught myself listening to “Creatures” by 311, not sure why. Maybe because of the stuff I have been working on…
Part three of the Greatest is up in the webcomic section. I really hope people are enjoying it. People have been nice enough leave comments and write it which has been good motivation to do some other webcomic material.
I’ll be on MTV’s TRL tomorrow afternoon at 3:30PM with Robert Downey Jr. The show is in fact taped and not live so what may end up looking like I’ve been working for 40 minutes is actually me working for 17 minutes on that portrait on the show. All in all it was a blast and I encourage everyone to check it out. It is really amazing to see how the crew works like such a well-oiled machine to get people in and out and prepare every aspect of the show so things run smoothly.
After the show airs I’ll be sure to post the artwork I did for the show. It’s not quite like the stuff you’d expect but time restraints and Mr. Downey’s very wild and creative mind had a pretty big influence on my work.
I’m considering selling my sketchbook online, I’ll keep you updated on when it’s ready to go on sale. If you are interested in getting a copy you can email me through the contact section OR if you are in the Manhattan area Jim Hanley’s Universe is selling it signed.
See you all on TV tomorrow! Check your local listings.

I’ll be making an appearance on MTV’s Total Request Live this Thursday to do a superhero portrait of Robert Downey Jr. as per his own fantasy of his ideal super powers. It’s a challenge but I promise you if you tune in you’ll see the result will be interesting.
Check your local listings for the proper times as they may vary in different locations.

For those wondering, I will be at booth number 1662 which is the Neal Adams Continuity Studios booth. I will be accepting commissions, selling my new sketchbook and I’m also bringing some Division 18 mini posters featuring my pin-up that I did with them. I might also bring some original artwork for sale, maybe even some from the new webcomic.
I hope everyone can make it, I guarantee the show will be great!
